Mesopotamian Art

The King's Highway

Connecting Mesopotamia to Egypt was a road called the King's Highway. It is probable that Abraham and his family used it in their travels. It was the primary trade route and was also probably used by the Midianite merchants who took Joseph to Egypt (Gen 37:28).

This connection was important for the influence of Mesopotamian art in Egypt. In the next section, you will see how the Egyptians took the ziggurats to the next level.

Mesopotamian Art = Power

Even today we see Mesopotamian Art being used to create power, but in the reverse. ISIS is destroying the art in one of Nimrod's cities in an effort to destroy pride in their people's heritage. They also sell the artifacts to buy weapons.

6They will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod with drawn sword. He will deliver us from the Assyrian when he invades our land and marches into our borders.

10"In that day," declares the LORD , "I will destroy your horses from among you and demolish your chariots. 11I will destroy the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds. 12I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells. 13I will destroy your carved images and your sacred stones from among you; you will no longer bow down to the work of your hands. 14I will uproot from among you your Asherah poles and demolish your cities. 15I will take vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that have not obeyed me." - Micah 5:6, 10-15

Is this a coincidence? This same chapter foretells of the birth of Jesus.

Today's Power = Technology

The people of the Mesopotamian area saw art as a form of power. Today our form of power is in technology. It provides access to all forms of information, good or bad. It is our source of communication; TV news, emails, texting, phone calls, music, movies, etc. The large sculptures and small idols have been replaced with big screen TVs and iPhones.

"Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God." - Leviticus 26:1
